Embryo Transfer

Embryo Transfer

Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) is a process in assisted reproductive technology (ART) where embryos that have been cryopreserved (frozen) during a previous IVF cycle are thawed and then transferred into the uterus for implantation. FET allows couples to use previously stored embryos, avoiding the need to undergo a fresh IVF cycle. This method offers greater flexibility and is often used when previous cycles have produced excess embryos that can be stored for future use.

In India, IVF and embryo freezing technologies have gained widespread popularity, especially among couples who face fertility challenges or want to delay parenthood. As infertility rates rise due to various factors such as late marriages, lifestyle changes, and medical conditions, FET offers a practical and cost-effective solution for couples. The ability to freeze embryos ensures that patients do not have to undergo repeated cycles of stimulation and retrieval, providing more chances for successful pregnancies with minimal physical strain.

Methods of Frozen Embryo Transfer

  • Natural Cycle FET – In natural cycle FET, the woman’s menstrual cycle is monitored to identify the natural ovulation period. The frozen embryos are then transferred to the uterus without the use of hormone stimulation.
  • Hormone Replacement Cycle FET – In this method, the patient’s menstrual cycle is controlled using hormone therapy, which helps prepare the uterus for embryo implantation. The frozen embryos are thawed and transferred when the uterine lining is thick and receptive.
  • Cryopreservation Methods – Different techniques are used to freeze embryos, including slow-freezing and vitrification. Vitrification, the rapid freezing technique, has been shown to have a higher success rate in preserving embryos, as it minimizes the damage caused during freezing.

With the support of our trusted Frozen embryo transfer Centre in Coimbatore, these advanced methods help improve success rates and offer a smoother, more reliable IVF experience.

Process

  • Ovarian Stimulation – The first step in preparing for FET is ovarian stimulation (if necessary) for embryo retrieval.
  • Endometrial Preparation – Before embryo transfer, the uterine lining (endometrium) needs to be prepared to receive the embryo. This is done using hormones such as estrogen and progesterone to mimic a natural cycle and create an optimal environment for implantation.
  • Thawing of Embryos – Once the uterus is ready, the frozen embryos are carefully thawed.
  • Embryo Transfer – After the embryos are thawed and selected, they are transferred into the uterus using a catheter.
  • Post-Transfer Care – After the embryo transfer, patients are often advised to rest and follow strict hormonal therapies to support pregnancy. The physician monitors the patient’s progress through blood tests and ultrasounds.
  • Pregnancy Confirmation – About 10 to 14 days after the transfer, a blood test is performed to check for pregnancy. If successful, ultrasound imaging is used to confirm fetal development.
